Grand Canyon National Park

Rim-to-Rim (R2R) hike

On May 24, 2015, we did a Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (R2R) hike. I'd like to share our experiences and hopefully it helps your next adventure. We decided to hike from south to north. Before the trip we booked Trans Canyon Shuttle from North Rim to South Rim. Their staff were very knowledgeable. I highly recommend their service. On the trip day, we stayed in Las Vegas overnight; then drove to North Rim early next morning. We got to North Kaibab trailhead parking lot at about 12pm. At the time this article was written, overnight parking at North Kaibab trailhead was allowed although I saw signs said sleeping in the car overnight was not allowed. The shuttle picked us up at about 1:45pm. After we arrived to South Rim at around 6:30pm, we stayed in Bright Angel Lodge (pre-booked). On next day, the first Hiker Express shuttle picked us up at 5am. The bus stop was right out of the lodge, which was why we chose Bright Angel Lodge. Note that Hike Express shuttle starts at different time depending on the month. You should check with park service for schedules. We got to South Kaibab trailhead at about 5:30am. Temporature in early morning in May was low. I recommend a pair of thin gloves.
